The Pirinexus is one of southern Europe’s great gravel loops: around 350 km linking the Catalan Pyrenees, French Roussillon and the Costa Brava on greenways, forest tracks and quiet lanes. Our self-guided version starts and ends in Girona, with comfortable hotels and your luggage waiting every evening.

Day 1 · Arrival in Girona and warm-up

30 km · 200 m

A relaxed spin along the river Ter to check the bike and loosen the legs in one of Europe’s cycling capitals.

Day 2 · Girona to Sant Joan de les Abadesses

92 km · 1,200 m

Into the foothills of the Pyrenees on gravel, greenways and country roads through the Garrotxa, finishing in a historic monastery town.

Day 3 · Sant Joan de les Abadesses to Céret

86 km · 900 m

The most adventurous stage: over the eastern Pyrenees into France on remote forest gravel, to colourful Céret, loved by Picasso and Matisse.

Day 4 · Céret to L’Escala

76 km · 520 m

Down from the mountains through vineyards and olive groves to the Costa Brava and the fishing town of L’Escala.

Day 5 · L’Escala to Girona

97 km · 450 m

Wetlands, Empordà villages and open farmland on quiet gravel and greenways back to Girona.

When to go and who it is for

Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is hot in the plains but fine in the mountains. Days are long in kilometres but gentle in gradient, so any regular cyclist comfortable on gravel can do it, and an e-bike turns it into a relaxed holiday.
