How to change the chainrings on your bike

From 52-36 to 50-34 on a Shimano 105 crankset

Changing chainrings is one of the most effective ways to adapt your road bike to the terrain. Going from a semi-compact 52-36 to a compact 50-34 gives you easier gears for climbing, which is ideal for mountain routes or for riders who prefer a higher cadence.

Step by step

  1. Check compatibility: the new chainrings must match your crankset bolt circle (BCD) and the number of speeds (11 or 12).
  2. Remove the chain or drop it off the chainrings, then remove the crankset if needed.
  3. Undo the chainring bolts and fit the new rings in the correct orientation (the pin that prevents chain drop goes behind the crank arm).
  4. Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern to the torque recommended by Shimano.
  5. Lower the front derailleur so the cage sits 1 to 3 mm above the big ring, and adjust limits and cable tension.
  6. Check the chain length: with smaller rings you may need to shorten it.

Tip: if you only want an easier gear occasionally, a larger cassette can be another option. Ask us and we will help you choose.
